How to Feel Full Longer with Smoothies

This one is for all my smoothie lovers! I can remember the day I fell in love with smoothies. It was my first year of teaching. I was staying late at school for a back to school open house night when all the parents come in to see the classroom and meet the teacher. One of the parents who I had gotten to know a bit already and knew I would often stay for hours after school working on things must have picked up on the fact that I often neglected to nourish my body properly. He brought me a smoothie that night, it was so delicious, and I felt so great after drinking it.   Smoothies have become a regular in my life ever since.

My favorite smoothie continues to be the Glowing Green Smoothie, I love the taste; but more importantly, it’s packed full of essential nutrients– leafy greens and fruits that my body needs a plethora of every day. I often have a smoothie as part of a meal or as a snack. Depending on what my body is telling me, sometimes I need a bit more substance in my smoothie, to feel fuller longer. If you’re a smoothie drinker too, I’m sure you’ve experienced the problem of it not being enough, that your body is still hungry. So I’ll often get asked, what else can I add to my smoothie so I feel fuller longer?

My top 3 add-ins to feel full longer with smoothies:

1. Chia Seeds– Chia seeds are little black seeds are packed full of nutrients making them a true superfood. Chia seeds are a great source of fiber and protein; which help satisfy hunger and make you feel fuller longer. I will add about 1-2 tbsp to my smoothie at the very end of the blending process, blending on a low setting for just a few seconds. You can add chia seeds in with the other ingredients earlier in the blending process; this will allow the chia seeds to absorb more liquid and thicken the smoothie about a bit. When I travel, I also bring little bags of them with me so I can add them to smoothies on the go, just swirling them around with my straw or a spoon.

2. Avocados- Avocados are another superfood packed full of essential nutrients. Since avocados contain healthy monounsaturated fats and fiber; they help us feel fuller longer. They are also an excellent source of protein, potassium, and other vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. I try to have a half to a full avocado a day. When I make a fresh smoothie, I will often add a half of an avocado to it, which also thickens up the smoothie, making it a bit creamier.

3. Protein powders- Protein powders are a quick way to add more protein to our diets. There are a lot of options out there in the protein supplement world. My smoothies are already full of great flavors; a simple, pure protein is all I need; such as pure hemp protein powder. If you eat dairy, pure whey protein is a great option. There are so many other protein options out there, such as pea, coconut blends, and even pumpkin seed protein!

Whatever protein you choose; choose one that is pure without extra additives.
